Silver Medal for SILASIL ENERGY

EuroTier Innovation Awards 2006

With a clear signal for forward-looking innovations, the DGL awarded SILASIL ENERGY, the silage additive specifically developed for energy plant silages, the Silver Medal at the EuroTier 2006 exhibition. With this award, the DLG acknowledges the pioneering role of Schaumann silage additives in biogas production.

The primary aim of using silage additives in energy plant silages is to maximise the amount of energy in the substrate, from harvesting to feeding into the reactor. The challenge is to avoid energy losses through malfermentation and aerobic instability during the storage phase, at feedout and in the pre- storage pit.

SILASIL ENERGY contains specialised hetero- and homofermentative lactic acid bacterial strains which create an optimal fermentation profile for biogas production. Special emphasis was placed on promoting the fermentation of acetic acid during the storage process. This ensures that the key product of methanogenesis is available at high concentrations for biogas production.

Studies by HAWK Göttingen showed an average increase in the methane yield from maize silage of 10 %. This has a sustained impact on the profitability of biogas production facilities and on the efficient utilisation of the area under crop.
