Biogas production can be increased if specially defined requirement standards are observed during the use of trace elements. This is why over 1,800 businesses are already backing the process developed by Schaumann BioEnergy for obtaining precisely metered, plant-specific trace element mixtures. To calculate optimum supplement mixtures, the trace element concentration of fermenter contents is analysed in comparison with the requirement standard. The result is that the microorganism groups in the fermenter receive their trace element supplements precisely as required while ruling out any risk of overdose.

Patent specification on the trace element requirement standard
With the aim of establishing a scientific trace element requirement standard for the supply of microorganisms in biogas production, Schaumann Research started work in 2006 in joint projects with the Universities of Hohenheim and Graz. Just 15 months later, the results were ready to be included in a patent specification and lodged with the European Patent Office. The process has been patented since January 2011 (European Patent EP 1997901 B1), thus ensuring that the application of an improved supply of microorganisms with trace elements in biogas production is recognised and protected for Schaumann BioEnergy.
The biological availability of the trace elements to be supplemented is also covered by the patent specification. The aspects considered in this respect include the use of different product formulations and application intervals as well as the optimum combination with additives and complexed trace elements.
As the use of biogas substrates is becoming more and more diverse, the research work done by Schaumann BioEnergy continues unabated and is receiving German state funding as part of an FNR research and development project.
